The “Dirty” Dog

Experiment Objective: Recreate the classic New York–style street dog through controlled immersion in a customized dirty-water solution.

Required Materials

  • Fully cooked hot dogs

  • Hot dog buns

  • Water

  • Light beer, optional

  • White vinegar

  • Garlic powder

  • Onion powder

  • Paprika

  • Black pepper

  • Salt

  • Yellow mustard

  • Sauerkraut

  • Finely chopped onions

Experimental Procedure

  1. Fill a saucepan with enough water to fully submerge the hot dogs.

  2. Add optional light beer, a splash of white vinegar, and a generous serving of garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, black pepper, and salt.

  3. Adjust the formula as desired. These measurements are intentionally left open for experimentation.

  4. Bring the solution to a gentle simmer. Do not rapidly boil.

  5. Introduce the fully cooked hot dogs and heat until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F.

  6. Transfer each specimen into a warm bun.

  7. Apply yellow mustard, sauerkraut, and finely chopped onions.

  8. Record your final formula and share the results with your fellow Glizzologists.
