The Beer Dog

Experiment Objective: Create a rich, sweet-and-smoky hot dog using beer immersion, Coca-Cola onions, sharp cheddar, and barbecue sauce.

Required Materials

  • Fully cooked hot dogs

  • Hot dog buns

  • Beer

  • Sliced onions

  • Coca-Cola

  • Butter

  • Sharp cheddar cheese

  • Barbecue sauce

Experimental Procedure

  1. Pour enough beer into a saucepan to fully submerge the hot dogs.

  2. Bring the beer to a gentle simmer. Do not rapidly boil.

  3. Add the fully cooked hot dogs and heat until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F.

  4. In a separate pan, melt butter and add the sliced onions.

  5. Add enough Coca-Cola to coat the bottom of the pan.

  6. Cook slowly until the onions become soft, dark, sticky, and caramelized. Add more Coca-Cola as needed.

  7. Steam the buns until warm and soft.

  8. Place sharp cheddar cheese inside each steamed bun.

  9. Insert the hot dog while hot so the cheese begins to melt.

  10. Top with Coca-Cola onions and finish with barbecue sauce.
